Shaman's mask

This mask represents the angalkut (shaman) and has a hole in the mask's surface representing the passages (or ice holes) though which the animals move in their journey toward the hunter. This mask was collected at Andreafsky, Alaska by Captian Hubbard a trader who with his son spanned nearly a century of trading with locals and hauling freight in the Bering Sea region. His son Joseph was the captian of the Augusta C. He died in 1972 at the age of 93. (Meyers 1999)
