"Mbangu, the bewitched is one of the most widespread of the masks among the Central Pende." Several interpretations have been recorded about this mask; that his half black half white face represents the scars of someone who fell into a fire, that it addresses a human response to the infirmed thereby reafirming strength and compassion. (Strother 1998:139-153)
