Ancestral spirits took up residence in figurative carvings called bioma. This animated figure was kept in a shrine and was the place were spirits remained to watch over the well being of the owner and his family. At specific times, spirits came into the community and animated figurative carvings and masks. This sculpture represents an ancestral spirit that has been coaxed to dance.
