Spirit board, gope
Urama
19th/early 20th century
Wood, pigment
TC 494

This remarkable spirt board is carved on both sides; this occurs very rarely. One side depicts a spirit face and the other side is highly abstract showing the navel which is a portal for the ancestral spirit to enter and eventually reside in the board. It was photographed in situ by Thomas Schultze-Westrum at the time of its collection.
